Heute führen Norbert Bretz und Carolin Kutzera das Familienunternehmen. Hier teilen sie ihr Geheimnis ewiger Jugend: Mut. Carolin: Bis heute haben wir den Mut behalten, uns selbst treu zu bleiben und nicht dem Mainstream zu unterwerfen. Gleichzeitig hat das Unternehmen in seiner langen Historie Turbulenzen erlebt und sich immer wieder neu erfinden müssen. Wären wir nicht offen für Veränderung und Herausforderungen, würde es uns nicht mehr geben. Diese Carol in Kut zera & Norber t Bret z Neugier gegenüber dem Wagnis leben wir auch beim Design. Oft kommen wir bei der Produktentwicklung an den Punkt: Oh Mist, wie kriegen wir das hin? Aber indem wir hartnäckig bleiben, ausprobieren, testen und offen miteinander kommunizieren, finden wir einen Weg. Das Ergebnis ist nie ein rein funktionales Sofa, sondern ein Objekt mit Seele, das eine emotionale Geschichte erzählt. Es ist wichtig, dem Bauchgefühl zu folgen, übrigens auch bei der Einrichtung. Unsere Kundinnen und Kunden entscheiden sich meistens für das Design, das sie im ersten Augenblick bewegt hat, bevor die limitierenden Gedanken eingesetzt haben. Es ist wie ein Love- at-first-sight-Moment. Norbert: Ob es Reisen waren, sportliche Risiken oder Projekte im Job: Ich habe in meinem Leben zu vielen Dingen ja gesagt, zu denen andere nein sagen würden. Man will ja auch ein bisschen Abenteuer erleben. Wir sind so erfolgreich geworden, weil wir mit unseren Möbeln über vermeintliche Grenzen hinausgehen, nicht nur was die Ästhetik betrifft. Unsere Arbeit basiert auf einem Handwerk. Die Polsterer und NäherInnen machen das seit langer Zeit und sind sehr geschickt, was uns ermöglicht, eine einmalige Formensprache und Qualität zu realisieren, die andere nicht umsetzen können. Für solche Ergebnisse muss man auch aushalten können, dass andere es besser wissen. Neuen Perspektiven, der Eigenverantwortung – und dem Eigensinn! – von Mitarbeitenden Raum geben. Mitreißende Dinge entstehen, wenn alle tun, worin sie am besten sind. Die Kundinnen und Kunden wollen wir dazu einladen, das innere Kind zu hören und sich Momente zu gönnen, von denen sie träumen und die ein pures Glücksgefühl hervorrufen. Bretz vereint zwei im Kern konträre, aber grundlegende Themen des Lebens: Einerseits laden die Kreationen der Interior-Marke ein zu phantastischen Reisen voller Abenteuer und Freiheit. Andererseits bieten sie Raum für Geborgenheit und Sicherheit. So definieren sich die True Characters – irgendwie nicht zu durchschauen, aber sie fühlen sich ganz schön gut an. Diese Vision erhält ihre Form in einer Möbelmanufaktur, wo Bretz mutigen Pioniergeist gleichermaßen kultiviert wie über hundert Jahre deutsche Polstertradition. Aus der Lei- denschaft für das Besondere und durch ausgefeilten Produktionstechniken entstehen modulare, multifunktionale Konzepte. Das Sofa lässt sich nicht wegdigital isieren“ Norbert: Mit dem Wildcat- und ZebraVelours kam unser Durchbruch vor 30 Jahren, als wir anfingen, das zu machen, was wir wirklich gut finden. Wildcat passt zu Bretz, weil es für diesen ungezähmten Charakter steht. Eine Wildkatze hat etwas Stolzes und gleichzeitig Zartes an sich. Zum 130jährigen Jubiläum lassen wir den Bezug neu aufleben. There’s a lot that can happen in such a long time... 1560months full of ingenuity and madcap ideas, packed with innovation and staying power. Dreamscapes made in Germany for no less than five generations. Today, the family business is run by Norbert Bretz and Carolin Kutzera. Here, they share their secret of eternal youth: courage. Carolin: Looking back, we’ve always had the courage to stay true to ourselves and not pander to the mainstream. Our company has also witnessed many turbulent chapters in its long history, and has had to reinvent itself time and time again. Yet if we hadn’t been ready for change and challenges, we’d no longer be in business. This willingness to take a gamble is also reflected by our designs. During product development, we often find ourselves saying: “Damn it – how is that even going to work?” But we stay stubborn, we give it a go, we try things out, we provide honest feedback – and we always find a way. The end result is never just a ‘sofa’ per se, but an item with a soul, with a story to tell, full of emotion. Following your gut feeling is always important – and furnishings are no exception. Typically, our customers will pick out the design that first caught their eye, before they start thinking it over and narrowing things down. So, it’s a love-atfirst-sight moment. Norbert: From travel to extreme sports or projects at work: I’ve said yes to plenty of things in my life that others would’ve had turned down. Sometimes, you need that walk on the wild side. Our enduring success is down to the fact that our furniture breaks with convention and not only in terms of its visual appeal. Our work is based on a handicraft. Our seasoned upholsterers and needleworkers are exceptional artisans, which gives us the opportunity to fully realize our idiosyncratic style and quality that others will never achieve. Making it this far also means standing firm in the face of criticism from know-it-alls. And giving our staff space to explore new horizons, go their own way – even be a little wayward! Extraordinary things happen when everyone does what they do best. We want to invite our customers to commune with their inner child, to indulge in those things they’ve always dreamed of and to lose themselves in the joy of the moment. Wildcat suits Bretz, as it stands for this untamed kind of character. A big cat has an air of hauteur tempered by its delicate frame. We’re relaunching this velour to mark our 130th anniversary.

Il peut se passer beaucoup de choses en 130 ans... 1560mois d'imagination et d'idées folles, de nouveautés et de résilience. Des univers oniriques fabriqués en Allemagne et sur cinq générations. Aujourd'hui, Norbert Bretz et Carolin Kutzera dirigent l'entreprise familiale. Ils partagent ici leur secret d'éternelle jeunesse : le courage. Carolin: Jusqu'à aujourd'hui, nous avons gardé le courage de rester fidèles à nous-mêmes et de ne pas nous contenter de suivre le mouvement mainstream. En même temps, au cours de sa longue histoire, l'entreprise a connu des turbulences et a dû se réinventer encore et encore. Si nous n'étions pas prêts aux changements et aux défis, nous n'existerions plus. Cette volonté de prendre des risques, nous la cultivons également dans le domaine du design. Souvent, au cours du développement d'un produit, nous en arrivons au constat suivant : « Oh, mince, comment on va faire ? Mais en persévérant, en tâtonnant, en expérimentant et en communiquant librement entre nous, nous trouvons une solution. Le résultat n'est jamais un canapé purement fonctionnel, mais un objet avec une âme, qui raconte une histoire émotionnelle. Il est important de suivre son instinct, aussi en matière d'ameublement. Nos clients optent généralement pour le design qui les a émus au premier coup d‘œil, avant que les pensées restrictives ne prennent le dessus. C'est comme un moment « coup de foudre ». Norbert: Qu’il s’agisse de voyages, de risques sportifs ou de projets professionnels, dans ma vie, j’ai dit oui à beaucoup de choses auxquelles d’autres auraient dit non. On a bien aussi envie d‘un peu d’aventure. Si nous avons connu un tel succès, c’est parce que nous dépassons les soi-disant limites avec nos meubles, et pas seulement en termes d’esthétique. Notre travail est basé sur l’artisanat. Les tapissiers et les couturières le font depuis longtemps et sont très habiles, ce qui nous permet de créer un langage des formes et une qualité uniques que d’autres ne peuvent pas mettre en œuvre. Pour obtenir de tels résultats, il faut aussi pouvoir accepter l’idée que d’autres sont plus compétents. Accorder une place aux nouvelles approches, à la liberté d’action – et à l’opiniâtreté ! – des collaborateurs. Des choses exaltantes voient le jour lorsque chacun fait ce qu’il sait faire le mieux. Nous voulons inviter les clients à écouter l’enfant qui sommeille en eux et à s’offrir des moments dont ils rêvent et qui leur procurent un sentiment de pur bonheur. Norbert: Avec les velours Wildcat et Zebra, nous avons fait une percée il y a 30 ans, c'est-à-dire lorsque nous avons commencé à faire ce que nous trouvions vraiment bien. Wildcat convient à Bretz parce qu'il représente ce caractère indompté. Un chat sauvage a quelque chose de fier et de doux à la fois. À l'occasion de notre 130ème anniversaire, nous redonnons vie à ce revêtement. Bretz réunit deux thèmes de vie essentiellement opposés mais fondamentaux : d'une part, les créations de la marque de mobilier d'intérieur invitent à des voyages fantastiques, pleins d'aventure et de liberté. D'autre part, elles offrent un espace de protection et de sécurité. C'est ainsi que se définissent les « True Characters » (les « personnalités authentiques ») - d'une certaine manière, elles ne sont pas faciles à cerner, mais on adore comment elles nous font nous sentir. Cette vision prend forme dans une manufacture de meubles où Bretz cultive aussi bien un esprit pionnier courageux que la tradition plus que centenaire du garnissage allemand. La passion pour l'exceptionnel et les techniques de production sophistiquées donne naissance à des concepts modulaires et multifonctionnels. Ce n'est que lorsque le canapé, le lit, le fauteuil ou l'accessoire sont peaufinés jusque dans les moindres détails qu'ils répondent aux exigences les plus complexes. Here fun and relaxation go hand in hand. Hand me my cocktail, darling, and my copy of Vogue! This finely crafted sofa has a lushly sculptured silhouette with precise lines and unusual angles, making it visually extravagant and sensual to touch. At the same time, the wonderfully upholstered backrest provides great support so that no one falls into the water – oops – backwards. C'est l'essence même des journées d'été insouciantes : voguant au fil des heures, les pensées dérivent agréablement. Ludique, cette création fait référence à un îlot flottant avec une goutte d'humour, comme le pop art aime à le cultiver. Plaisir et oisiveté ne se contredisent pas ici. The seems traverse through the sofa like veins through a leaf. They give life to that natural phenomenon and give it volume and structure. 22 hours is how long it takes to shape this sensitive furniture sculpture, until it is ready. Cette perfection organique implique beaucoup de travail manuel et de patience. Pour réaliser la coupe ambitieuse (doucement recouvrée, parfois sur l’arête, parfois arrondie, lisse, mais pas trop tendue) chaque losange de tissu a nécessité beaucoup de travail. Les coutures parcourent le canapé comme les veines d’une feuille, conférant un souffle de vie au phénomène naturel en lui apportant volume et structure.
